2 Great Parenting Tips from a Mom
Got some great tips from a mom Kirsten recently. Here’s a
couple:
1. Take an interest in your Aspie child’s interest.
My now 11 year old son has changed obsessions over the years but
when he was into Bionicle, I read the Bionicle series books to
him out loud and played the Bionicle games online with him.
I also memorized many of the characters and he loved the fact
that I knew what he was talking about and I had my own genuine
opinions about which were my favorites and we even had debates
about all things Bionicle.
I have had to memorize different aspects of his obsessions so I
can have real conversations about his world.
I have even learned to play his games on the Xbox and N64.
I don’t have a lot of time as a single parent but it doesn’t
take a lot of time, and it means so much to them that you can get
into their world with them.
2. The louder your Aspie gets, the softer your voice should be.
You need to be the calm in the storm.
Sometimes even the consequences of their actions need to come
later when things cool down and you remind them about what they
did, and that is why they cannot go online or have their toy/game
that was causing so much frustration.
Big thanks to Kirsten, and if any of you have tips please email
me as I’d love to share them.
