On being thankful
Sometimes it’s a matter of perspective.
Every Friday in our Facebook support group we have a ‘celebration day’.
Parents have the chance to share a little about their week.
We’ve had all kind of ‘wins’ over the past year like breakthroughs in therapy … gaining a job … making friends …
school achievements … independent travel trips … successful toilet training . . . whatever it is.
(Sometimes it’s a place to share when things are going wrong too. So we can offer help and support).
This week a mom shared simply that her family had been well fed, housed and healthy for another week.
Ended by saying that was a lot to be thankful for.
Indeed it is.
In psychology terms it’s the basis of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs:
Physiological needs (warmth, shelter, food, water).
In real world terms:
It’s living. Getting through each day. Some good. Some bad. Some indifferent.
Just real life.
I’m sure you can relate.
And talking of real world perspectives. It’s pretty much all we have in our support group
No fake ‘look at my amazing life’ Facebook profiles (you know where everyone has pearly white smiles, countless friends and a
never ending carousel of social engagements and amazing vacations … yeah right!)
No trolling, nasty fights or online bullying which so many people sadly seem to engage in.
No pointless debates and polls about the size of Kim Kardashian’s latest handbag!
Just a group of parents of children, teens & adults with Asperger’s helping each other get through the day.
Sound useful?
