Summer holidays update

Hi there – Just a quick update to let you know that I have been swamped with questions to write for the summer holidays project.

So a huge thanks to all those who have submitted a question … I’ll try to get to as many as possible.

And please do not send any more questions in at this time as I have MORE than enough to be going on with!

Just a few sample questions that I will be answering are …

How can I get him to do things besides computer and video games? He just does not want to go out and do things!

How do I get my child to understand how to approach other children on the playground? He tends to be aggressive when  meeting anyone new.

How do you keep siblings from killing each other during summer vacation?

How do I get our son to interact more with the family during the holidays.

How do you settle a child into a new environment when you go away for a holiday?

What kind of activities are the best to put your child into?  If I ask him about a sport or subject, he says no.

How do you deal with kids who will play with your child when they are the only ones around but will dump your kid as soon as another kid arrives?

My son doesn’t have friends at home- how do I keep him from being so isolated during the summer?

How close to the school routine is it important to stay with during these months or do you start a different routine during these months?

… And a whole lot more too!

Thanks again for your support and I’ll try to get this ebook completed in the next few weeks (if anyone can post a comment on the blog when school holidays start in the USA and Australia I would appreciate it; as I am not sure being a Brit!)

Thanks

Dave Angel

  1. School in the US varies, but most kids are out be this week. It starts back up around the 3rd or 4th week of August.

  2. I live in Kansas, USA. The 2008-09 school year ended May 21. School will resume for the 2009-10 school year on August 13.

  3. School in the US varies district to district. Here in the Northeast, kids get out sometime in June (mine are finished the 18th and the 24th)and start back between the last week of August and the first week of September (mine return Sep.9). Southern areas usually end earlier and return earlier.

  4. Some schools in the US are out already, at the start of June, some go until the 25th. Same for starting in the fall, some begin early August, and some don’t start until the 1st or 2nd week of September.

  6. We’re in North Carolina. We are out June 10th through August 25th but there are many schools here that are year round.

  7. Most schools in Kansas and Nebraska get out the week before Memorial Weekend and start around the 3rd week of Aug.

  8. Our schools here in South Carolina got out last week and will start up again the third week of August. At least my son has a day camp geared toward autistic spectrum kids and typically developing peers that will start next week (yay!). Most people aren’t so fortunate to have that kind of resource.

  9. Our year end June 18, and begins the second week of September.

I am planning a daily schedule, similar to school, since my 9 year old son does better when his day is planned and he can follow a set schedule. It won’t be all work, but we will be doing Math, reading, and some fun science projects to keep him stimulated and engaged. Otherwise, it’s Bionicles or Legos and computer. :-(

  10. Summer holidays in Australia are during December and January. Depends on which state/territory you live in when you break up and go back for the new school year. Is usually 1st or 2nd week of December break-up and back last week of January or 1st week of February.

  11. In Australia the next holidays are June 27 to July 12. Of course our summer school holidays are just before Christmas until February.

  12. Baltimore, Maryland schools are finished June 12. Children return to school August 31. School openings and closings vary by counties and states also. Also it depends on the snow days,if not used get out earlier!! But Maryland law is they have to attend 180 days of school.
