The latest information on what is happening to Gary Mckinnon – Hacker and UFO fan with Aspergers

Hi there I am sure many of you have been reading the latest news (probably with some horror) as to what is happening with Gary McKinnon who stands accused of being a hacker by the US military (although Gary himself maintains he was looking for information on UFO’s)

I will outline more below for those who don’t know much about this case involving a young man with Aspergers from the UK. But the point of this article is to try and add a little more awareness and help Gary if at all possible.

So there are three things that I would ask you to do when you’ve read this article ..

1. Click the blue link at the bottom of this article that says “Bookmark It” and then use one of the little social bookmarking buttons (such as Yahoo, FaceBook etc.) to bookmark this article. This means that the article will be seen by more people who in turn can help to raise awareness.

2. Write a quick message of support for Gary in the comments section on the blog.

3. Go to the website http://freegary.org.uk/ and write a message of support for Gary.

All these three things shouldn’t take more than a minute so please try to help if you can.

Anyway here’s the article …

In 2001 and 2002, Gary Mckinnon made a name for himself by hacking into the U.S. military computer system and wrecking havoc.  The incidents caused the military and NASA computer systems to fail periodically and led to a reported $700,000.00 repair bill.  The timing of these incidents could not have been more perilous since the events of 9/11 revealed the country’s vulnerability in regards to terrorist threats.

For the past four years, Gary’s family and legal team have been fighting to keep him from being extradited from the United Kingdom, where he lives, to the United States.  Gary has openly admitted that he hacked into these computer systems, but without terrorist or malicious intentions.  He was simply searching for information on extraterrestrial life, an intense personal interest.  This is not an attempt to avoid the issue, but a plea for his case to be heard in his home country for medical reasons.

Gary Mckinnon has Asperger’s Syndrome.  Asperger’s Syndrome is an Autism Spectrum Disorder.  People with Asperger’s Syndrome may exhibit the following symptoms or characteristics in any combination and in differing degrees:

*    Inability to pick up on social cues, or lack of social skills:  trouble reading body language, starting and maintaining conversation.

*    Struggles with changes in routines.  Needs routine and order to function.

*    Engages in repetitive movements and behaviors.

*    Appears to lack empathy.  Very blunt and literal, regardless of how he affects others.

*    Uses formal speech.  Often called “professor speech”, naturally uses proper wording over slang.

*    Avoids eye contact and exhibits unusual facial expressions or postures.

*    Has obsessive interests.  It is common to be preoccupied and extremely knowledgeable about one special interest.

*    Struggles with anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, and/or self-isolation.

*    Talks a lot, especially about the obsessive interest. It is common for him to have one-sided conversations or to think aloud.

*    Shows signs of delayed motor development. He may be late in learning to ride a bike or play ball. His walk may appear awkward or clumsy.  Handwriting is often a problem with heavy pressure and uneven spacing.

*    Has issues with the sensory system.  Often becomes overwhelmed by noises, lights, tastes or touch.   Can be hypersensitive or hyposensitive, or a combination within the senses.

Parents of children with Asperger’s Syndrome in the United States and the United Kingdom are cringing as they watch this case unfold.  Having struggled through bouts of isolation and depression, many of these parents can easily see their own children in a similar situation.  Gary’s actions are classic behavior for a person with Asperger’s Syndrome.  His medical needs should be researched and noted as the real reason behind the events of 2001, and the possibilities for increased medical peril due to his condition should be seriously considered during his legal contest.

Thanks for reading and don’t forget to …

  2. Dear Gary,

My prayers and thoughts are with you and I’ve signed the Daily Mail petition. Don’t give up hope; many people are rooting for you.

    Kind regards,

  3. My heart goes out to Gary and his family. Unfortunately for our kids, what is fascinating to them could also get them into trouble. Jail is no place for Gary. He needs medical attention and his family. I’m praying for them.

  4. It would be great if we could see the world through the eyes of an Aspergers child. The government would see that it is almost impossible to lie. We would never have to second guess anyone again. Please, government, wake up and spend our money on important matters. Better yet, give this person a job to find out what you are doing wrong. Hold your head up Gary.

  5. Sending prayers and thoughts to Gary and family. I know all to well the challenges you all face having a son who has aspergers. He to has had the “law” called on him in school but was unable to remeber doing or making the threats during outbursts. Good luck and hope all goes well.

  6. Achieving a true “jury of his (psychological)peers” would prove to be a quite a challege. Therefore, I come forward as another Aspie, putting this predicament itself on trial: it is a biased and exaggerated reaction from the non-critical thinking majority.

Allow the defense to be Duress. Gary’s condition involves uncontrollable curiosity, stemming from Autistic traits, all from our nation of choice: Imagination.

    Free Gary

  7. Thank you for supporting Gary. My grandaughter has Asperger’s and my heart goes out to Gary and his mother. I am in England and have sent emails to my MP and the Whitehouse asking for Gary to be dealt with in his own country.

  8. I have “bookmarked” it and I have sent a message to President Obama to please learn about Asperger’s Syndrome and realize that Gary wasn’t being malicious. I also suggested that if he was able to hack the system, then maybe they ought to realize what an asset he can be and to consider offering him a job instead of making him more of a victim (victim of Asperger’s and victim of the court system). I agree with Jwyan Johnson, finding a true jury of Gary’s peers would prove to be a great challenge if not impossible. Gary doesn’t deserve what is happening to him.

  9. My thoughts are with Gary and his family. More understanding is needed for this disorder as these people are not criminals. If more help and support had been out there then this may not have happened, also maybe the US should be looking at how anyone could hack into their systems anyway, rather than wasting time prosecuting an Autistic.

    Comment by Frances Mosley — August 7, 2009 @ 4:41 pm

  10. Thank you for your simple but clear explanation of the specturm. Most of the ignorance shown here is a choosing not to research or understand. Rather, they are spouting off to “hear” themselves talk. It is disheartening but unfortunately a symptom of what is happening in our larger society of unmasked hatred for anyone who is different, has less money or a member of a minority. We actually have a wonderful President now who does have a heart for people who suffer and values diversity. Unfortunately, it seems like it’s going to take a very long time for that to catch on to the people who need to “get it”. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

I am also from the US and hope that Gary can be tried in the UK but probably for some different reasons than most expressed here. Change is terribly difficult for Aspies and in order for him to be able to appropriately participate in his own defense he needs to be where there is as much familiarity as possible. He is very bright but that does not mean that he can navigate the social, cultural and political changes he would need to learn very quickly if he were to stand trial in the US. It would be easier for a carpenter to set a broken leg, or a plumber to install a stint in a human brain than for an Aspie to navigate a foreign culture – Aspies struggle with the cultures they are raised in and stumble clumsily at times when it is familiar; to impose such dramatic change as would happen from the UK to the US would signal the end of justice.

I am rather fascinated by the suggestion that the Pentagon should hire him. Not a bad suggestion! Not a bad suggestion at all.

  11. I would like to offer my full support and prayers to Gary and his family.
I hope the UK government will intervene on his behalf so he can be tried in this country. I am sure that in the end common sense will prevail and this unfortunate case will be resolved. It does, however, highlight the dangers of internet use, especially for people with ASD and other vulnerable individuals. We need to address this issue with some urgency.
All the best Gary – be brave!

  12. As a former Marine and grandparent of an asberger child I find this as ignorant and ill thought out an act as any our goverment has undertaken. We as the most powerful, helpful, and forgiving nation in history should be able to tell the differance between this young man and a threat to our national security!!!!I fought for and am proud to have served this great nation however this is an emarrasment to me that it continous to go forth. I pray for God’s intervation to insure this man is let go and all charges dropped!

  13. Thinking of Gary and praying that justice will win the day for him. This incident really highlights how vulnerable people with AS are. My heart goes out to Gary’s Mum.(I’m the mum of an Aspie too)

    Comment by Clare — August 7, 2009 @ 6:38 pm

  14. OMG !!!!!
I am a parent of an Aspie and I am in tears…Poor Gary.
If only they could understand how this whole thing would be terribily upsetting for Gary and his family.
Aspergers children (or adults) are so very special and it would be great if we all saw the world from their perspective, as they have so much to give.
There would be a world with NO LIES and A SAFER, HAPPIER PLACE TO LIVE.
They have to understand that Gary did not do what he did to cause any trouble….he did it without the knowledge of what he was exactly doing (hacking) and he did it to fulfill his obsession with extra-terrestrials……..
He can not be trialled fairly. No Apsie could be trialled fairly -that is unless they were trialled by other Aspies.
So may I suggest that if this court case has to go ahead then let all the Jurors by Aspies. They will wonder what all the fuss is about.
    Hang in there..Gary….
The whole world is on your side.
    Jill (from Australia)

  15. I have been supporting Gary McKinnon since I first heard of his case a year ago. As a woman with Asperger’s, I would hate to see him extradited here to America. I’m not saying AS is an excuse for what he did–he clearly knows now that it was wrong–but that it would be beyond cruel and unusual to ship him across the ocean.

    Comment by Ylanne Sorrows — August 7, 2009 @ 8:14 pm

  16. I WILL KEEP GARY AND HIS SITUATION AS WELL AS HIS FAMILY IN PRAYER! I THINK EVERYONE OF US WITH A LOVED ONE ON THE SPECTRUM CAN FEEL THEIR PAIN AND FRUSTRATION! THIS IS SO FRIGHTENING WHEN WE ALL PROBABLY HAVE THIS HIDDEN FEAR IN OUR MINDS FOR OUR LOVED ONES!

    Comment by kim — August 7, 2009 @ 8:50 pm

  17. My heart goes out to Gary and his family who must feel the world is against them, surely the government must intervene and bring some sort of sanity to this affair or is this asking too much. I am sure if the shoe had been on the other foot this would have been sorted before now.

    Comment by Jim Scott — August 7, 2009 @ 11:36 pm

  18. My heart goes out to Gary and his family during this stressful and emotionally harrowing time. My advice would be to be vocal about Asperger’s – get the word out for those who do not know about it. This will provide more impetus to free Gary.

    Comment by Meradism — August 8, 2009 @ 12:04 am

  19. The whole thing is just ridiculous! Callous murderers are given the benefit of psychological evaluation and treatment, all of which is considered and affects whether or not they stand trial. Here you have a young man who was merely pursuing his special interest, a characteristic of Asperger affectees. Leave Gary alone! To Gary & his family, hang in there. Wish you all the best.

    Comment by shaima — August 8, 2009 @ 12:10 am

  20. We will better protect and heal our world with trust and tolerance, than with suspicion and wars. Please, let’s help Gary, however we each are able. At the very least, we can take personal responsibility for becoming better human beings, and it will grow from there. “Think Globally, Act Locally!”

    Comment by Donna Smith — August 8, 2009 @ 2:17 am

  21. I fully agree with this. My son has Asperger’s and I find this very hard at times. He is only 17years of age and with going through teenage years without a father is even harder when it is just us to. My thoughts are with Gary and his parents.

    Comment by Katie — August 8, 2009 @ 3:02 am

  22. Is this man really the “Evil Genius” that the American security people would wish you to believe or is he rather an “inspired genius” that the British people should recognise?
The claim is that he accessed top-secret computers with complete impunity, well then you are now aware that these systems are insecure and at risk to the terrorist. Surely he needs rewarding for that information in a similar manner to the way we throw gold at football players.
This country should recognise that we have a lot of talent here in the IT world far superior to the incompetent dreamers in charge of programming military computers in USA.
If my deductions are true why are we as British tax payers paying millions of pounds for American programming consultants in numerous departments of our government , our banking and financial sectors? . By their own admission, they are incapable of designing a secure system
Its time we reappraised these ease that these contracts are given and question why this government has, so slavishly, to” kowtow” to its American masters. Perhaps we have the making of another expenses scandal
Mr McKinnon should be freed immediately and offered employment to assist in the supervision of government computer programmes.

    Comment by Arthur Hapgood — August 8, 2009 @ 3:21 am

  23. Isn’t this just a nightmare scenario for all parents of Aspergers kids? I really hope the US Administration realises how traumatic extradition and subsequent jail life would be for Gary and show some mercy. And surely a man of his IT talents would make a fabulous addition to their defence programme?!

    Comment by Louisa — August 8, 2009 @ 4:26 am

  24. As a grandparent of a child with Aspergers i hope that eventaully sense will prevail and Gary’s case will be trated in the manner in which his contdition and intentions are at the for front and that it should be done in this country in an environment that will lead to as little stress for him and hi family as possible. dont make things worse is what i feel.

    Comment by marina — August 8, 2009 @ 4:41 am

  25. What a truly unfair thing to happen !!
My son with Aspergers is only 9 with things like this happening I really fear for the future. His Developmental condition definitely legally needs to be taken into consideration.I am thinking of Gary and his family. We all need justice

    Comment by mary — August 8, 2009 @ 6:14 am

  26. I agree that he has to made aware somehow of the extentof his actions , better to do it here, but, clearly those in the IT section in the US didn’t do a good enough job in preventing hackers, thus we have said from the outset they should hire him he clearly has major potential in that area…..
I am however more than aware the trouble these kids seem to keep getting themselves into despite parents best efforts, my own included.

    Comment by helen hanson — August 8, 2009 @ 6:38 am

  27. I relate fully to Katie. I have raised my Asperger son on my own from birth and he is now nearly 13. I marvel at his gifts and I despair at his shortcomings – in society’s view.
He is very good on the computer and researches so many different topics. My thoughts and prayers are with Gary and his family, this could be our child/children and as we all know, they cannot lie.

  29. I am praying for Gary and his family. I too have an 18 year old son with Aspergers and my heart goes out to Gary. I agree that jail is not the answer. The Government should be seeking advice from him on how to improve their “Secure” site.

  30. I have an adult son with Asperger’s, so I have first hand understanding here. Like another one of the posters, he grew up in a household of females, since his father was rarely in his life. My heart goes out to Gary and his parents, and my prayers follow.

    Comment by Barbara Byrd — August 8, 2009 @ 11:16 am

  31. This case is similar to that of a young man whose obsession with the New York City subway system led him to prison. Because of his detailed knowledge of subways and the friendships he had forged with system operators, he was able to route trains in an emergency and avoid a terrible accident. His story was reported in The New Yorker magazine some ten years ago. The city refused to see his intervention as a boon because he had not been officially trained and certified to do this work. I hope Clint’s case is resolved differently and that his skills can serve him well in a good position in the future.

    Comment by Margaret Brittingham — August 8, 2009 @ 12:13 pm

  32. Would just like to add our support for this very intelligent young man. Surely he should be praised for highlighting the ease of hacking into the military’s computer system and has made them sit up and think more about security. Gary should be offered a job not punished for his abilities, which I am sad to say happens with many of our Aspergers people. As previously mentioned so many people are unwilling to understand and are ignorant to how the mind of an ASD person really works, many frightened by knowledge. Lets hope that someone somewhere stands up and sees sense! Good luck Gary.

    Comment by Lesley Bristow — August 8, 2009 @ 1:49 pm

  33. These children/ people have already been punished by having the syndrome.
To punish them for making an innocent mistake is cruel.
Unfortunately, society at large chooses NOT to find out and understand more about this neurological condition and NOT to help these people live a normal, happy, fulfilling life and to integrate in society.
My heart goes out to Gary and I sure trust he will pull through this unscathed.
No jail for Gary. Give him and his family the support they need and deserve.

    Comment by Luminita-Lucia Sprague — August 8, 2009 @ 2:10 pm

  35. My thoughts are with gary and his family. As the mother of a 20yr old son with aspergers i feel appalled at the lack of understanding being displayed at his condition. This is something that could happen to any other aspergers with garys skills, i think a better idea would be for them to actually employ gary and utilise these !

    Comment by gaynor — August 8, 2009 @ 7:16 pm

  36. The judical system really needs to be looked at. The time should fit the intent of the crime.(1) A judge really needs to look at Gary’s intent.
(2)Let this be a learning lesson for all people with Aspergers. Go through the proper channels.
    (3) If Gary is incarcerated for his crime. He should be given the opportunity to study his interests.
    (4) Gary’s gift needs to be directed to benefit himself and society.

I pray God is with you Gary, and gives you the strength to get through this. It is a tough lesson to learn.

    Comment by Sharon — August 8, 2009 @ 8:52 pm

  37. For parents of Aspergers children, this is their worst nightmare. I wish Gary and his family success in their efforts to get Aspergers Syndrome properly recognised in law.

  40. my heart goes out to you and your family,as having a son with asd, i fully understand obsessions, but the u.s.a should give you a medal, as you can get into top imformation, a terrorised could, you have done them a favour, they need to get the computers hacker safe.if any goverment member had a autistic child in there family, they may realise what life is really like, gary, you will get through this, dont get down, there is a lot of sopport out there, and deserve

  41. My son has aspergers and I could not imagine how life would be if this was us in this situation, it could happen to anyone of us. Therefore we must give Gary and his family all the support they need. He must not be sent to prison. People that do not understand aspergers will see the condition as negative due to this case. The government must do something positive NOW!

    Comment by christine cree — August 9, 2009 @ 3:30 pm

  42. At what point does the government stand up and acknowledge that this is just as much a problem of their making? How do people on the spectrum (diagnosed to boot!) slip through the cracks in their systems and are only noticed when something goes wrong and then they are expected to act and be trialled as though there is no undelying issues. How apalling with all the information that we have today on autism that a ruling body is not willing to stand up and pay attention to the facts. How is it possible to have a fair trial without that? Our hearts go out to you and your family Gary and we pray that you receive a fair trial locally by an educated court.

    Comment by Kaylene — August 9, 2009 @ 6:39 pm

  43. I wish you all well. Maybe the government could consider it a learning experience too. It sounds like they also need to learn about empathy just as formally as we need to teach it to our kids. hopefully sense will prevail.

    Comment by Jo — August 9, 2009 @ 11:32 pm

  44. All the best Gary. May the people concerned realise that what you did was a purely innocent attempt to satisfy your knowledge on a subject you love.

  45. I too have a son 12 yrs old with Aspergers, I worry about him as he will soon be a teenager and how he will cope as an adult, what is happening with Gary is a parents worst fear. I feel for Gary’s mum who has had to live through this with him. I deplore the amount of money wasted on both sides of the atlantic, and shows both sides in a very bad light. I hope they see sense soon. Good Luck to Gary and his mum, my thoughts are with you.

    Comment by Karen Robins — August 10, 2009 @ 6:55 am

  46. Good luck to you Gary. Your case highlights the need for more understanding of the way different people think, and the need to realize that someone really could have hacked into those computers to pursue information they’re interested in rather than maliciously. I wish people would stop being paranoid and start being more tolerant and well-informed about the different kinds of people in the world, and what motivates their behaviour.

  50. I can empathize with you as I also have a teen aged daughter with Aspergers and she also faces hardships down the road. Kudo’s to Gary’s mom for supporting her son. I really feel this is all very innocent (as most instances involving Asperger’s usually are.) and I am hoping for the family to come out on top of this. I definitely will be as supportive as I can be with this and I will pass it on. Thank You!

  51. As a mom of an Aspie, I pray that they will realize Gary’s incredible abilities and offer him a job versus a jail sentence. I also pray that he is getting the help he needs to distinguish right from wrong and the assistance he needs to curb the overwhelming curiousity he feels when he knows that he is doing something he should not, such as hacking. Only then can he be truly protected. My prayers are with you Gary and family.

  53. My heart goes out to Gary and his family. This just goes to show how much needs to be done to educate both society and educators on the needs of social instruction for these individuals. Although we do need to take these things seriously, zero tolerance is NOT the answer!

  55. dear gary & family,
keeping you in our prayers that officials & experts will view your case fairly. i believe, education of all parties involved is essential to understand how a simple curiosity ended up as a criminal act. never give up hope. God is always on your side. take good care. sending happy, pleasant thoughts your way.

  56. So few understand Aspergers unless someone in the family has it. I continue to educate everyone my son comes in contact with. My heart goes out to Gary and his family. Asking an AS to stop researching an obsessive interest is like asking someone to stop breathing! They mean no harm, they search for knowledge. Take all the money the government is using against Gary and dump it into Asperger research and program!!!!! Lord knows our families are exhausted. We don’t need another battle to fight! I will continue to follow this story and pray for a positive outcome for all concerned.

I have a 9 year old son who has Aspergers and I can easily understand how a thing like this could happen. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers Gary. Good luck Gary and more importantly God bless you. He knows how special a person you are.

  58. SHAME on the US government for wanting to criminally prosecute a young man with a neurological disability. The US military should be asking themselves how he was able to hack into their precious system in the first place. Obviously it’s not that secure. This man doesnt need jail, he needs help. Putting him in prison isnt going to help him. And to the people that want to prosecute him, I hope and pray that their loved ones become afflicted with this disorder that so many suffer from. Then maybe, perhaps, they would have a better understanding of what it’s like to be Gary. I pray for you Gary and for you family. Dont ever give up hope. If the US is as great as it says it is, then perhaps they will make the right decision in this matter.

  59. Another tragic story of an Aspie. His Asperger’s must be taken into consideration, as it is inherently involved in motive.
Perhaps the government should employ Gary to help secure their system and make it less prone to hacking.Lucky for them it was a curious Aspie and not a terrorist who got in.

  60. I disagree with ALL of these posts. Gary needs to be punished for his extremely irresponsible actions. This is not fun and games to hack into national security websites. He should be extradited and prosecuted. Aspies ARE capable of knowing right and wrong. Some of you parents are at fault for letting your children get away with excuses. My son knows that if he does wrong, he will be punished. Become parents – set high expectations for your Aspie children. That is what I do with my son. I love him very much – and because I do, I set high expectations. I don’t allow him to blame his Aspergers Syndrome.
